The cannabis industry is growing by leaps and bounds almost daily thanks to a large portion of the world in agreement on legalization. One of the areas the industry is seeing a lot of action in is in the portable vaporizer market. A growing section of vapers are really getting into the new vape pens hitting the market. These vapes work a little differently from other portable vapes, but they are much more discreet and a little easier on your wallet.
Before telling you what the best vape pens on the market are, it would be super helpful if you actually knew how they worked a bit.
What is a Vape Pen?
I’m glad you asked. A vape pen is a portable vaporizer with a big emphasis on portable. These little vapes look similar in shape and size to a pen, making it easier to vape when and where you want.
Don’t let their size fool you. These little devils can pack quite the punch resulting in great sessions and thick clouds.
These devices are mostly popular for being small and easy to use on the go, but they can also be very versatile tools in your toolbox. Lots of folks use them for dry herbs, but they truly excel with oil and wax.
One of the best parts of any vaporizer is the lack of combustion involved. This is the key difference between vaporizers and other forms of smoking. When you smoke a cigarette, you light it on fire and the combustion burns the tobacco. This can give you a lot of extra crap that is just not good for your body.
When vape, your materials are not meant to come into contact with open heat sources. In most portable vaporizers, this process is called conduction. In this process, the heat source and materials are separated by some sort of barrier, like a glass screen or ceramic plate. It is this separation that stops your materials from combusting (burning).
How Does a Vape Pen Work?
In a nutshell, a vape pen consists of two parts:
Here’s a quick video overview that should help get you better acquainted:
When you purchase a new vape pen, it will come with both sections already, though it is possible to purchase each section separately. Normally, this would be to increase your battery or the size of the chamber.
Vape pens can be very useful and versatile gadgets. Often times, you can find pens that will handle multiple material types using the same device. More than that, the portability of these vaporizers gives you complete freedom and control over when and where you enjoy yourself.
How to Use a Vape Pen
Using a vape pen is simple and the same no matter which material you’re using.
- Begin by unscrewing the battery (bottom section) from the chamber (top section).
- On the chamber, open it up to reveal the opening for your chosen materials. This will be the same for all materials, but the actual chamber may look different depending on materials used.
- Fill your chamber about 80% of the way. For wax or dabs, simply take a small piece that will fit into the hole in the center of the atomizer (chamber).
- Seal it all back up, but don’t over tighten.
- Reconnect your battery to your chamber.
- Turn it on and get to vaping.
Now that you know a little more about how these nifty little gadgets work, let’s see what each contender has to offer.
Best Portable Vape Pens of 2020
With so many new vape pens hitting the market, it can be a bit of a challenge wading through looking for one that truly meets your needs. That’s why I’ve decided to make things easier for you and list some of the best vape pens on the market (as of now) that can work with a variety of materials.
1. KandyPens Elite – Best Vape Pen for Wax/BHO/Oil/Hash
Too often, you see something that just looks so damn sweet and you just have to have it… Only to find it’s terrible. That’s not what we have here. The KandyPens Elite is blinged out in every detail.
The KandyPens Elite is described as a luxury vape pen. The reason for this becomes obvious as soon as you open the box. The KandyPens Elite has an extremely elegant look with color combinations like Gold/Rose Gold and Gold/Ceramic. Normally, I’m a sucker for a small vape pen because I love being able to tell the man to screw off and vape where I want, but the KandyPens Elite is the pen I use when I want people to see me.
More than how sweet it looks, it feels like butter in your hands… No really, it has a buttery smooth finish that actually is a joy to hold. It’s awesome.
The KandyPens Elite is at the top of the list for wax and oils for a reason. KandyPens constantly upgrades and improves as each model is released and they have learned one very important thing – oils and wax can leak. With the Elite model, we now have sealed atomizers to avoid leakage.
Keeping up with the luxury label, KandyPens Elite comes with two different coils. The first is quartz-lined with dual quartz rods. The other is a coil-less ceramic-lined atomizer with a ceramic plate to heat, similar to the Linx Hypnos Zero featured below. Both atomizers work very well and it may just come down to a personal preference.
Both atomizers have elevated air holes to help further prevent leakage. The mouthpiece comes with an air-carb that can act as a carb to produce thicker clouds or leave it alone to help ease the draw. Either way, the draw has a very natural feel to it.
With your coils, a little residue may build up over time. The thing to remember with this is that it’s completely normal and will not affect the performance of your new Elite pen at all.
Here’s what to do to burn off excess residue:
- Remove the mouthpiece
- Hold the pen upside down over a paper towel
- Press the power button in few second bursts to melt the residue
While a small vape pen, the KandyPens Elite is not exactly discreet with it’s flashy look and design. Another drawback is how little the chamber can actually hold. Luckily, this is an efficient device so even with a small amount, you’re still going to be getting 5-10 draws per session.
2. Linx Hypnos Zero – Best Vape Pen for Oil/Concentrates/Shatter/Dabs
The Linx Hypnos Zero is an improved version of the company’s original Hypnos vape pen. The original was your basic vape pen with a coiled atomizer. The Linx Hypnos Zero is a vast improvement over this original by simply changing the heating chamber. Instead of using the basic coiled atomizer, this updated version uses a pretty sweet heating system with a ceramic plate.
When you look closely at the atomizer, you will see the plate in the center. It’s raised just slightly in the middle to give a bit of a moat around it. While the whole chamber is made of ceramic so your concentrate or dabs never touch metal, the only thing that heats up is the raised plate in the center. This gives a surprisingly clean and efficient vape with next to no reclaim. This is the main reason the Linx Hypnos Zero makes the top of this list. Innovation should always be rewarded.
When you want to use a vape pen to vape any type of material, you want it to be discreet. The Linx Hypnos Zero is about as discreet as they come. Measuring at a minuscule 10.7 cm (with the mouthpiece), the Hypnos Zero is by far the smallest concentrate vape pen on the market. The all stainless steel body gives it a clean and crisp look without standing out too much. The build is durable and well-made.
Another truly awesome thing about the Linx Hypnos Zero is the company’s dedication to completely toxin-free vaping. Beside the all stainless steel build and ceramic chamber, your mouthpiece is glass, as opposed to plastic or rubber. This means you have no chance of getting any toxins that are present in both plastic and rubber mouthpieces. It’s not a life-threatening issue, but if you’re vaping for medical reasons, you may as well be as healthy as possible. The glass mouthpiece on the Linx Hypnos Zero also gives you one of the cleanest tasting hits I have experienced in a vape pen.
We have four different temperature setting on the Linx Hypnos Zero. This is better than your standard three heat settings on most vape pens. Linx Vapor played around a bit with their original four heat settings for better performance and longer battery life. You’ll get probably a little more than an hour of use out of your new Linx Hypnos Zero, but thanks to the ceramic plate, you’re going to be able to get more hits than you normally would with the same battery life.
Since nothing is perfect, it’s nice to look at the downsides to the Linx Hypnos Zero. In this case, there are only a couple real downsides. I prefer a longer battery with a short charging time. The Hypnos Zero doesn’t have the longest battery and can take up to an hour and a half for a full USB charge.
The other downside would be the residue that collects on the threading to the battery and the mouthpiece. This is nothing that affects how well the vaporizer works and is easily fixed with cleaning, but it can be a little annoying when things get sticky.
Very discreet and clean looking
No toxins thanks to glass mouthpiece
One hour of battery life
Hour and a half USB charging time
3. V2Pro Series 7 – Best Vape Pen for Multiple Materials
Now we’re getting into the fun stuff. I enjoy vaping wax, oils, and concentrates, but my heart lies in the beautiful flowers of the world. Call me old-school, but if you’re going to vape some weed, you may as well make it some, nice, green, sticky-icky herb.
The V2Pro Series 7 is actually one of three different vapes in the V2Pro line. This Series 7 is pretty similar to the Series 3, only with a larger chamber. This is a 3-in-1 vape which means you are able to enjoy dry herbs and flowers, wax and oil, and even e-juice by changing cartridges. While the V2Pro Series 7 does well in all three, it never truly goes above and beyond in any.
There are only three heat settings, with two and three being a little too warm for me, but not terrible. This portable vape does produce big clouds, but the only you will truly see video-worthy hits is with long draws. Flavor quality will decrease as you take longer draws, but if you simply want to enjoy some nice alone time with your favorite strain or juice, the V2Pro Series 7 is great.
I do like the decent heat up time of 30 seconds or so for the low setting. Battery life is almost an hour on a full charge and it does have pass through charging, meaning you can use it while it’s charging. That and the fact that it actually comes with USB and wall charger is a plus in my book.
To vape other materials, you simply change out the cartridge. For my e-juice test (nicotine-free, of course), I tried some of my favorite Cherry juice in the larger 2.5 ml cartridge and went for a hike. When I vape e-juice, I’m not doing it for the nicotine. I smoke zero nicotine juice and just enjoy the flavor. The flavor here is strong and clean with pretty thick clouds, again, with slightly longer draws.
Another improvement over the Series 3 is the addition of variable voltage. If you like more vapor in your e-juice sessions, then set the temperature higher. There are three different settings: 3.7V, 4.2V, and 4.7V. Switching temperatures is as easy as clicking the power button few times.
I usually have a smaller e-juice vape on me plus whatever main vape I’m using at the time. That can be a bit of a pain. The V2Pro Series 7 is the perfect all-in-one vape when you don’t want to carry around multiple vapes.
The V2Pro Series 7 is a jack of all trades, yet a master of none. It really excels at e-juice, but does a decent job with dry herbs and oil. One of the few reliable 3-in-1 pen vapes on the market. It’s also not truly a pen vape, but it is compact and versatile.
Vapes Dry herbs, wax/oil, & e-juice
Easily switch cartridges
Decent battery life all around
Never truly performs amazing
You’ll only use one temperature likely
Average vapor output without long draws
4. VaporFi Orbit – Best Vape Pen for Weed/Marijuana/Dry Herb/Flowers
Affiliate Link: http://affiliates.vaporfi.com/affiliates/
The new kid on the block and already making into a top spot, the VaporFi Orbit vaporizer pen is the company’s first effort in the dry herb arena. Previously, VaporFi has released a series of successful e-juice vaporizers and have built a solid reputation.
When you look at the VaporFi Orbit and its two models (red and black), you won’t notice anything new or groundbreaking. Hell, the VaporFi Orbit may not even stand out to you at all. That’s because those eggheads in the labs at VaporFi didn’t try to invent the vapor trail their first time out. Instead, they focused on what they knew and what has worked well… And made it way better.
Instead of being a two-piece pen vape you normally see, the VaporFi Orbit is a two-piece pen vape where you snap the mouthpiece open to expose the chamber for your herbs. To control the VaporFi Orbit portable vaporizer, you simply use the one-button control located on the front of the device. If you want simple, this really is about as foolproof as you’ll find.
Pro-Tip: Do not overfill the chamber or pack your herbs down too tightly. This can restrict airflow and really screw up your session.
There are three heating preset features here. To adjust heat, you simply hold the power button down until the light indicator changes: red at 360°F, green light means 380°F, and blue when it hits 420°F. The vapor will be warm, but so hot as to need the mouthpiece at the lower settings. When vaping at the highest level, I suggest using the extended mouthpiece that comes packed with the VaporFi Orbit.
Speaking of mouthpieces, we have a plastic mouthpiece and a silicone extender. Normally, I prefer glass mouthpieces for a clean and tasty vape. With the VaporFi Orbit, I never got that hint of plastic or rubber that you tend to get with inferior vape pens and portable vaporizers. This could change over time. As this is not my main portable vape, I can’t really vouch for everyday use.
Considering this is VaporFi’s first shot in the dry herb market, most of the downsides can be looked at as small annoyances more than anything. Things such as a slightly warm mouthpiece can be easily fixed with included extender. It’s not as small as a tradition vape pen, but it’s hard to find a dry herb vape pen that truly works well.
Great Vape at a Great Price
Decent Sized Chamber
No Glass Mouthpiece
Dry Herbs Only
5. Quickdraw Cowboy – Best Vape Pen for Concealment
There is no way I could compile a list of the best vape pens around without giving some proper credit to the e-juice and nicotine vapers. The mainstream success of vaping as better alternative to smoking has really helped boost the rise of the mainstream cannabis vaping scene. Considering I don’t give enough time to my fellow e-juice vapers, I’m going to devote the next couple spots to a couple of the best liquid vape pens you can find.
The first is pretty freakin’ sweet. Feel like a true Wild West gunslinger with the new Quickdraw Cowboy vape pen. The high-quality liquid vape looks awesome and has some innovative features built in. The first thing everyone will notice is the interesting design made possible by the sidesaddle connector that connects the battery from the tank side-by-side, unlike traditional e-liquid vape pens where the battery connects to the bottom of the chamber/mouthpiece assembly.
At first, this may seem like just an aesthetic feature, but when you really look close at the sidesaddle connector, you see it is made from high-quality metal and designed for the tightest fit possible. By turning the vape pen world on its ear, the Quickdraw Cowboy has given users a new way to ensure both safety and care of their portable vaporizer. Normally, you have a vape pen floating around in your pocket, purse, or bag. While rare, it is possible for the pen to turn on or for you to accidentally leave it on, causing burns or worse.
Now, we can easily strap our Quickdraw Cowboy vape pen to our hips with the leather carrying pouch that comes with the kit. Fill your tank, connect your battery, and strap on to go about your day. The only piece visible through the pouch is the glass mouthpiece, making it discreet and easily accessible anytime you feel the need. The nearly 400 draw tank means you won’t be opening and filling constantly.
Vaping with the Quickdraw Cowboy is really a fun experience. For me, it was extremely useful on my hiking or walking trips. The belt loop hook is strong and easily connects to bags or clothing. The glass pieces give you a clean flavor and I actually blew some fat clouds. Look awesome in the woods, BTW. Take a hike during your next session. Transcendent… But I digress…
Only option is a leather carrying case. While not an issue for me, I was a bit surprised to see real leather and not a form of faux leather. You can easily keep the Quickdraw Cowboy pen vape in your pocket or bag, but the carrying case does help protect the device from bumps and bangs.
Very Unique Piece
Convenient Carrying Case
No Fake Leather Case
Clouds Could Be Thicker
6. Vaporcone Elite 2 – Best Vape Pen for E-Liquid/E-Juice/Nicotine
In our runner up spot for best pen vape for e-juice and liquid is the Vaporcone Elite 2. This is the (obviously, duh) upgraded version of the initial Elite vape pen from Vaporcone. It really appears they were listening to their users when they went back to the drawing board with this one.
My favorite upgrade is the added buffer piece between the chamber and mouthpiece. This new addition to the Vaporcone Elite 2 portable vaporizer helps keep heat and any possible liquid from reaching your mouth. It really does improve the overall vaping experience, especially when you’re out and moving and the vape tends to bounce a bit more.
Now, the true test of the best e-juice vape pens really comes down to how well it performs in the field. After using the Vaporcone Elite 2 for a few days, I can definitely say it is worth the purchase. The flavor is nice and strong, but you will get a bit of a rubbery hint every once in awhile. Battery life is nice and you won’t have to reload too often, even if you are an everyday juice vapor.
Why only a runner up, you ask? The Vaporcone Elite 2 still has a rubber mouthpiece. It is definitely an upgraded mouthpiece, but it’s still rubber. I prefer glass whenever possible for the purest flavor and best sessions.
7. R2 Series Vaporizer – Best Vape Pen for Under $100
There are some of you who are looking to try out a vape pen for the first time, or simply looking for something more portable, the R2 Series is great way to vape your wax or concentrates quickly and easily anywhere you happen to find yourself.
Besides looking out of this world with the cool green look, the R2 Series gives you a strong vaporizer in a compact package. Evenly vape with the new ceramic rod atomizer and low-temp coil system. There will be a little reclaim, but nothing that you can’t live with on the go.
The R2 Series won’t out perform the higher priced wax and concentrate pen vapes on the market. You will be able to get good rips and nice flavor.
Lower Quality Build
8. Dr. Dabber Ghost – Best Starter Vape Pen
With the recent growth in legal cannabis industry, there are more and more options available to vapers each and every day. One of the ‘new’ things hitting the market is wax and concentrates. While these forms of marijuana consumption aren’t exactly new, the mainstream use is fairly new thanks to recreational legal states like Washington.
The Dr. Dabber Ghost wax vape pen is a great first time vape pen to get your feet wet in both the vape pen world and the concentrates game. With the Dr. Dabber Ghost, the company has designed the pen to vape at a lower heat which conserves flavor and gives you a nice, smooth session.
The Dr. Dabber Ghost is high-quality, but as usual, it can’t compete with durability and efficiency of higher priced models and vape pens.
Tons of Sweet Add-Ons
Easy to Use
Uses a Wick System
9. VaporFi Rebel 3 – Best Vape Pen for Clouds
Once again, I need to give a shout out to the e-juice peeps over at VaporFi. Just because you want a fat cloud doesn’t mean it has to be concentrates, wax, or even cannabis at all. A vast improvement over the Rebel 2 in a few ways, the VaporFi Rebel 3 comes with a 5.8 ml capacity tank, a 3000mAh internal battery, and a 0.5ohm sub-ohm atomizer.
Not only will the VaporFi Rebel 3 give you some of the thickest clouds you will ever blow, it’s also one of the most user-friendly pieces available. One button to control everything without a lot of bells and whistles.
It is meant only for e-juice. If you’re looking to vape something else, this isn’t going to work for you.
.5ohm sub-ohm Atomizer
Thick Vapor Plumes
No Variable Wattage
No LED Control
10. G Slim Hookah Vaporizer – Best Rechargeable Hookah Pen
Grenco Science is a company started by a former Marine, so they have the ‘Can Do’ attitude with every outing they produce. The G Slim Hookah Vaporizer is no exception to that rule. The best thing about this hookah vape pen is that it’s small, easy to use, and priced right for beginners or those who regularly enjoy a good hookah vape pen.
As with everything Grenco Science releases, you can feel the quality in the G Slim Hookah Vaporizer and you can bet that you will get more bang for your buck here than with other similarly priced rechargeable hookah vape pens. Bigger isn’t always better, especially if you are trying to be discreet. The G Slim Hookah Vaporizer is perfect to throw in your pocket or purse and just whip it out when you need to.
It’s small. Sure, that can be a good thing, but you can have a larger hookah vape pen that is still discreet.
May Be Too Small
Vape Pen Buying Guide
After you’ve found a kickass portable vaporizer pen, you will want to ensure you take the best care of it for the longest use. Here are a few quick care tips to help you out:
- Cleaning – The only thing you really need to do to clean most vape pens these days is to just turn the vape pen upside down and turn it on. Any built up residue will just melt away. Some pieces may be soaked in ISO, but always consult the user’s guide first.
- Replacing – Depending on what you vape, there may be some pieces that will need replacing. For wax/oil vapers, you may have to replace atomizers or wicks. Coils can often go bad in some vaporizer pens, so having a couple extra on hand is always a good plan. Watch for things such a burnt taste or the vape pen not starting or working properly.
- Travel Case – No, I don’t mean go grab a fanny pack, dude. What I do suggest is you grab some sort of carrying case for your new vape pen. A lot of times, you will get a basic travel case when you purchase a new portable vaporizer kit. But you can always find better or more stylish ones.
Check your vape pen manufacturer’s website for any instructional videos. Many companies are using the internet and social media to not only sell products, but to help customers enjoy their products more effectively.
VaporFi has a bunch of videos to help customers with their products. Check out this video where they show you how to help prevent leakage from condensation and more.
If you decide to go vape pen shopping in the old brick and mortar smoke shops, buyer beware. Many of the local smoke shops don’t stock the top name portable vaporizers and vape pens. Sometimes they just import crap to shove on people. I’m not telling you to avoid your local shops. If you’re going to shop in an actual store, local is the only way to go.
What I am saying is to be aware of what you want and what you already know. You’ve found me, so you already have a leg up on the dude behind the counter. Ask questions and make sure he knows what he’s talking about. Do Not let a shop employee try to force his ideas on you. Remember, you have a smartphone and we’re just a click away. Knowledge is the best weapon you can have against sleazy corner shop hustlers.
The truth is, vape pens are just another type of portable vaporizer that you can have with you anywhere you go. They are pretty sweet and definitely the easiest way to vape on the go. You can sneak a hit or two when nobody is looking thanks to their small size and with today’s technology, you can portable pen vapes for almost any material. Isn’t the future awesome?
Finally, always choose quality over price. In the long run,it will save you time and a lot of headaches. Trust me.
